Rune Bergmann takkar av etter 15 år som kunstnerisk leiar

Det er vanskeleg å overvurdere kva Rune har betydd for festivalen. Då han og styreleiar Hallgeir Øvrebust løfta Fjord Cadenza opp frå aska i 2011, måtte dei pantsette husa sine for å betale musikarane. Det seier noko om kva slags engasjement dette har handla om – ikkje karriere, men snarare eit kall. Frå den dagen har arbeidet deira vore tufta på frivillig innsats og eit bankande hjarte for Sunnmørsregionen og for å skape eit fullverdig og mangfaldig musikktilbod til dei som bur her.

Rune er på mange vis andletet på Fjord Cadenza – og personifiseringa av kva festivalen prøver å vere. Entusiastisk, energifull og ujålete. Han vaks opp i Sykkylven og hadde ikkje tilgang til profesjonelt symfoniorkester eller store konsertsalar. Men han hadde tilgang på eit sterkt janitsjarmiljø som heia einannan fram, og som gav eit fantastisk fundament for å utforske musikken på ein fri og upretensiøs måte. Det har forma han til den dirigenten han er i dag – ein dirigent orkestre i alle verdshjørner vil ha framfor seg. Han inspirerer, og han viser kva ekte speleglede handlar om.

Avskjeden kjem ikkje stille. I 2026 står han foran 150 utøvarar med Beethovens 9. symfoni på programmet – det største og mest ambisiøse prosjektet Fjord Cadenza nokon gong har satt opp. Med eit stjernelag av solistar, kor og orkester blir dette eit verdig punktum på eit ekstraordinært kapittel i festivalhistoria.

Rune Bergmann steps down after 15 years

After 15 years as Artistic Director of Fjord Cadenza, Rune Bergmann has decided to step down. He is leaving on his own terms – with the most ambitious project the festival has ever undertaken.

It is hard to overstate what Rune has meant to the festival. When he and board chair Hallgeir Øvrebust brought Fjord Cadenza back to life in 2011, they mortgaged their homes to pay the musicians. That says something about the nature of their commitment – not a career move, but a calling. From that day on, their work has been built on voluntary effort and a deep dedication to the Sunnmøre region and to creating a rich and diverse musical offering for the people who live here.

Rune is in many ways the face of Fjord Cadenza – and the embodiment of what the festival tries to be. Enthusiastic, energetic and unpretentious. He grew up in Sykkylven without access to professional symphony orchestras or grand concert halls. But he had access to a strong brass band community that lifted each other up, and that gave him a wonderful foundation for exploring music in a free and unassuming way. That has shaped him into the conductor he is today – one that orchestras all over the world want standing in front of them. He inspires, and he shows what true joy in music really means.

The farewell will not be a quiet one. In 2026 he stands before 150 performers with Beethoven's 9th Symphony on the programme – the largest and most ambitious project Fjord Cadenza has ever staged. With a stellar line-up of soloists, choir and orchestra, this will be a worthy conclusion to an extraordinary chapter in the festival's history.

We are deeply grateful for everything Rune has given the festival, the region and our audiences over these years. We look forward to celebrating him as he deserves – and as he himself would say: Mit Schwung!
